Moves with the hit
The bars follow your track as it plays rather than looping on a timer, so a kick lands on the low bars at the moment you hear it. Bass on the left, treble on the right, no lag between what you hear and what you see.
Set your own sensitivity
Smoothing decides how twitchy or calm the bars are, so you can go snappy and aggressive or slow and heavy. Bar count sets how fine or chunky they look, and mirroring reflects them for a symmetrical layout.
Colour and background
A two-colour gradient or a flat colour, your cover art behind it with a blur so the bars stay legible, or your own footage with the bars rendered over the top.
Why most spectrum bar visuals look cheap, and how to avoid it
Spectrum bars are the default music visual, which means yours are being compared against every lazy one anybody has ever seen.
The problem with the default look
Spectrum bars are everywhere, which cuts both ways. Everyone reads them instantly as "music", and everyone has also seen a thousand bad ones, so the bar for looking considered is higher than it is for a stranger style.
The versions that look cheap almost always share the same three faults, and all of them are settings rather than taste.
The three things to fix
In rough order of how much they matter:
- Too many bars. A dense wall of thin bars turns into visual mush at phone size, where most people will see it. Fewer, chunkier bars read from further away.
- No smoothing. Raw frequency data is jumpy, and bars snapping around every frame look like an error rather than a design. A little decay makes the movement read as musical.
- Dead space. Most music has very little happening right at the top, so a spectrum stretched across everything leaves part of the frame permanently flat. Keeping it to where the track actually lives fills the picture.
- Flat colour. A single colour across every bar flattens the read. A gradient gives the eye somewhere to travel.
Where mirroring earns its keep
The one setting that changes the character most is mirroring. An unmirrored spectrum reads as an instrument, a readout of what is happening, which is right when the audience is other producers.
Mirrored, it stops looking like a measurement and starts looking like a design. Symmetry reads as deliberate, and on a vertical clip a spectrum mirrored above and below a centre line fills the frame in a way a single band sitting on the floor never does. For a promo post aimed at listeners rather than producers, that is usually the version you want.
