Why most spectrum bar visuals look cheap, and how to avoid it

Spectrum bars are the default music visual, which means yours are being compared against every lazy one anybody has ever seen.

The problem with the default look

Spectrum bars are everywhere, which cuts both ways. Everyone reads them instantly as "music", and everyone has also seen a thousand bad ones, so the bar for looking considered is higher than it is for a stranger style.

The versions that look cheap almost always share the same three faults, and all of them are settings rather than taste.

The three things to fix

In rough order of how much they matter:

  • Too many bars. A dense wall of thin bars turns into visual mush at phone size, where most people will see it. Fewer, chunkier bars read from further away.
  • No smoothing. Raw frequency data is jumpy, and bars snapping around every frame look like an error rather than a design. A little decay makes the movement read as musical.
  • Dead space. Most music has very little happening right at the top, so a spectrum stretched across everything leaves part of the frame permanently flat. Keeping it to where the track actually lives fills the picture.
  • Flat colour. A single colour across every bar flattens the read. A gradient gives the eye somewhere to travel.

Where mirroring earns its keep

The one setting that changes the character most is mirroring. An unmirrored spectrum reads as an instrument, a readout of what is happening, which is right when the audience is other producers.

Mirrored, it stops looking like a measurement and starts looking like a design. Symmetry reads as deliberate, and on a vertical clip a spectrum mirrored above and below a centre line fills the frame in a way a single band sitting on the floor never does. For a promo post aimed at listeners rather than producers, that is usually the version you want.

How do the bars sync to my audio?+
Each bar is driven by a different part of your track, so bass moves the low bars and treble moves the high ones. It is following the audio itself rather than being animated to it, so it cannot drift out of time.
How responsive are the bars?+
As responsive as you set them. The sensitivity control decides how fast a bar falls back after a peak: turn it right down and the bars snap hard on every hit, turn it up and they move slowly and heavily. Most sluggish-looking spectrum tools are stuck on a slow setting with no way to change it.
Why do other spectrum visualizers look laggy?+
Usually two reasons. Either the movement is heavily smoothed with no control exposed, so the bars glide instead of hitting, or the visual is a looping animation that is not reading your audio at all and only appears to line up occasionally.

How many bars should I use?+
Fewer bars read as bold and graphic and hold up better on a small phone screen. More bars give a finer, more detailed read that suits busier mixes and looks better at full size. It is a live control, so trying three values is faster than reasoning about it.
What does smoothing do?+
It controls how quickly a bar is allowed to fall back after a peak. Low smoothing is twitchy and precise, which suits sparse percussive material. Higher smoothing is calmer and stops a dense mix looking like static.
What is the mirror option for?+
It reflects the bars, either horizontally so the spectrum is symmetrical about the centre, or vertically so they extend above and below a baseline. Symmetrical layouts read as more designed and less like a readout, which suits a promo clip.
Can I add my cover art behind it?+
Yes. Upload a JPG or PNG and it sits as a background with a blur so the bars stay readable over it. You can also use your own video instead.
